Four large canvases are at the heart of the cycle that since the nineteenth century has been known as The Progress of Love. These canvases were painted after 1771 by Jean-Honoré Fragonard for a room of the music pavilion near the chateau of Louveciennes, which belonged to Madame du Barry, Louis XV’s last mistress.

‘The Progress of Love’ was created in 1771 by Jean-Honore Fragonard in Rococo style. Find more prominent pieces of genre painting at Wikiart.org – best visual art database. However, when the four canvases of The Progress of Love were delivered the following year, she rejected them in favour of another series in the new ‘antique’ style by Joseph-Marie Vien. Fragonard ended up keeping the paintings until 1790, when he retired for a year to his native town of Grasse and installed them there in a cousin’s house. The Progress of Loveis considered to be the culmination of Fragonard’s career, and thus it has received much attention from art historians. Fragonard’s Progress of Love at the Frick Collection, Colin Bailey has taken Sauerländer’s approach to the series.11 In this paper, rather than focus solely on the original four du Barry paintings or theories of progression and positioning, my reappraisal will look deeply at Fragonard’s series as a whole Jean-Honoré Fragonard: The Progress of Love: The Meeting - 1771–3 New York, Frick Collection. What could American robber barons Henry Clay Frick and J. Pierpont Morgan and famed courtesan Madame du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, all have in common? Why, their taste in art, of course. Fragonard’s reputation never fully recovered from the setback of Madame du Barry’s rejection of his four canvases for Louveciennes. He left France for Italy, and then, in 1790–91—at the start of the French Revolution—he went to Grasse, his birthplace in Provence, in the south of France.
